By Debbie McKelveyDebbie McKelvey, Co-Founder & Principal Designer · 30+ years remodeling Houston homes
TL;DR
In Houston, tile installation runs $8–$15 per square foot for porcelain or ceramic and $15–$25 for natural stone or complex patterns, as of 2026. Those are installation prices; the tile itself is extra. Backsplash installation runs $8–$25/sf, plus tile.
As of 2026, tile installation in Houston typically costs $8–$15 per square foot for standard porcelain and ceramic, and $15–$25 per square foot for natural stone or complex patterns. Those are installation prices; the tile itself is extra. Kitchen backsplash installation runs $8–$25 per square foot, plus tile. Large-format tile, herringbone and mosaics sit at the top of each range because they take more labor.
Below: what tile installation costs by type and by room, how to estimate a shower, what pushes the price up, and the parts of a tile job you shouldn't cut.
How much does tile installation cost per square foot in Houston?
Typical Houston pricing as of October 2026. All rates are for installation; add the cost of the tile you pick.
| Tile job | Installation cost per sq ft | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard porcelain or ceramic | $8–$15 | Plus the tile. Grid and subway layouts. |
| Natural stone or complex patterns | $15–$25 | Plus the tile. Marble, limestone, herringbone, mosaic. |
| Kitchen backsplash | $8–$25 | Plus the tile. Handmade tile and patterns at the high end. |
| Heated floor under tile | +$6–$12 | Added to the floor tile price. |
| Removing old flooring | +$1–$3 | Depends on what's coming out. |
Where you land within each range depends on the tile size, the pattern and how much prep the floor or wall needs. For a ballpark on a whole kitchen or bathroom, try our remodel cost calculator.
What does it cost to tile a floor or backsplash, by room?
Per-square-foot math using the installation rates above. Add the tile itself.
| Example | Area | Porcelain or ceramic at $8–$15/sf | Stone or patterns at $15–$25/sf |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bathroom floor | 100 sq ft | $800–$1,500 | $1,500–$2,500 |
| Kitchen or living-area floor | 500 sq ft | $4,000–$7,500 | $7,500–$12,500 |
| Kitchen backsplash | 30 sq ft | $240–$750 at $8–$25/sf |
The table is simple multiplication, so you can swap in your own square footage. The example areas are for illustration, not typical room sizes.
In a full remodel, tile is one line item among many. In a Houston kitchen remodel, tile and flooring are typically 5–10% of the budget (see our kitchen remodel cost guide). In a bathroom remodel, tile and waterproofing are 15–25% (see our bathroom remodel cost guide).
How much does it cost to tile a shower in Houston?
Shower walls and floors use the same per-square-foot rates, so you can estimate the tile labor yourself:
- Measure the tiled area. A 3×5 ft shower floor is 15 sq ft. Three walls tiled to 8 feet add about 88 sq ft. Call it 100 sq ft.
- Multiply by the installation rate. 100 sq ft at $8–$15/sf is about $800–$1,500 for porcelain or ceramic, or $1,500–$2,500 at $15–$25/sf for stone or a pattern.
- Add the tile. The tile you choose is priced separately.
Treat that as an estimate for setting the tile only. The waterproofing system, shower pan, plumbing and glass are separate parts of the job. In our bathroom pricing, a walk-in shower with frameless glass is a $3,500–$8,000 line item inside the overall bath budget, and replacing a tub with a tiled walk-in shower adds $3,000–$6,000 over a tub swap. See what a garden tub to walk-in shower conversion costs.
Every shower gets a waterproofing system (Schluter Kerdi, RedGard or Wedi, depending on the application) over cement backer board, never green drywall. In Houston humidity, skipping waterproofing guarantees tile failure within about 5 years. On the floor, we use small-format tile (2×2 or mosaic) with a rough texture, because the extra grout lines give slip resistance.
What makes tile installation cost more?
- Natural stone. Marble or limestone runs 2–3 times the cost of porcelain and needs ongoing sealing.
- Large-format tile (24×48 and up). Big tiles take more labor to set.
- Patterns. Herringbone and mosaics take more labor than a grid or subway layout.
- Heated floors. $6–$12 per square foot extra, worth it in a primary bath used daily.
- Prep. Tearing out old flooring adds $1–$3 per square foot, and a floor that might flex needs an uncoupling membrane before tile goes down.
Porcelain, ceramic or natural stone: which tile is best for Houston homes?
| Porcelain / ceramic | Natural stone | |
|---|---|---|
| Installation cost | $8–$15/sf | $15–$25/sf |
| Tile cost | Lower | 2–3x porcelain (marble, limestone) |
| Sealing | Porcelain never needs it | Ongoing |
| Wet floors | Matte porcelain recommended | Avoid polished stone |
Porcelain is dense and non-porous, which makes it the best all-round tile for Houston humidity. Modern porcelain mimics marble, travertine and wood with about 90% of the visual impact at roughly 30% of the cost. Natural stone still makes sense where it won't get wet every day, or where you want one statement surface.
Why do waterproofing and substrate matter more than the tile?
The most common tile mistake we see is the wrong substrate. Tile installed directly on drywall or particleboard fails. Done properly:
- Wet areas get cement backer board plus a waterproofing membrane.
- Floors that might flex get an uncoupling membrane such as Schluter Ditra.
You can't see this part once the tile is down, and it decides whether a bathroom lasts 5 years or 20. When you compare tile quotes, ask what's going under the tile.
How long does tile installation take?
In a bathroom remodel, waterproofing goes in during week 2 and tile during weeks 2–3, with grout in week 4. Patterns and large-format tile take longer than subway or grid layouts. A guest bath takes 3–4 weeks overall and a primary bath with custom tile and glass 5–7 weeks. Tile floors elsewhere in the house install like other flooring: most single rooms take 1–2 days.
What this means for your project in Katy and west Houston
In Katy, Cinco Ranch and Fulshear homes, two things matter on almost any tile job:
- Humidity. Houston's humid climate is hard on wet areas, so the waterproofing and backer board under a shower are worth more than an upgrade in tile.
- Porcelain for daily-use rooms. It never needs sealing, which is one less maintenance job in a humid climate. Save natural stone for a statement surface that stays dry.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How much does tile installation cost per square foot in Houston?
-
As of 2026, tile installation in Houston typically runs $8–$15 per square foot for standard porcelain and ceramic and $15–$25 per square foot for natural stone or complex patterns. The tile itself is extra. Large-format tile (24×48 and up), herringbone and mosaic take more labor.
- Does the price per square foot include the tile?
-
No. The $8–$15 and $15–$25 per square foot ranges are for installation. The tile is priced separately, so your total is the installation rate plus whatever tile you choose.
- How much does it cost to tile a shower?
-
Use the per-square-foot math. A 3×5 ft shower tiled to 8 feet has about 100 sq ft of tile, so installation at $8–$15/sf is roughly $800–$1,500 for porcelain or ceramic, or $1,500–$2,500 at $15–$25/sf for stone or patterns. That's an estimate for setting the tile only; the tile, waterproofing and glass are separate.
- How much does backsplash installation cost in Houston?
-
Kitchen backsplash installation typically runs $8–$25 per square foot in Houston as of 2026, plus the tile. Simple porcelain or ceramic sits at the low end; handmade tile and intricate patterns sit at the high end. A 30 sq ft backsplash works out to about $240–$750 in installation.
- Is natural stone tile worth the extra cost?
-
Sometimes. Marble and limestone run 2–3 times the cost of porcelain and need ongoing sealing. Modern porcelain mimics marble, travertine and wood with about 90% of the visual impact at roughly 30% of the cost. Avoid polished natural stone on wet floors.
- Can tile go directly on drywall or a wood subfloor?
-
No. Tile on drywall or particleboard fails. Wet areas need cement backer board and a waterproofing membrane, and floors that might flex need an uncoupling membrane such as Schluter Ditra. Wrong substrate is the most common tile mistake we see.
