As of 2026, most Houston guest bath remodels take 3–4 weeks once demo starts. Primary baths with custom tile and frameless glass take 5–7 weeks, and luxury spa primary baths with heated floors, steam showers and custom glass take 7–10 weeks. The schedule is set by the slow, careful steps: waterproofing, tile, and shower glass, which is measured after the tile is done and usually takes about two more weeks to arrive.

Here is what a typical bathroom remodel looks like week by week, what sets the pace, and what makes one run long.

How long does a bathroom remodel take in Houston?

Typical Houston timelines as of October 2026, counted from the day demo starts to the final walkthrough:

Scope Typical timeline What's included
Guest bath 3–4 weeks New tile floor, tub or shower surround, vanity, lighting and exhaust fan.
Primary bath with custom tile and glass 5–7 weeks Walk-in shower with frameless glass, double vanity, quartz tops, tile floor, updated fixtures.
Luxury spa primary bath 7–10 weeks Heated floors, steam shower, custom glass and premium finishes.

For what each scope costs, see our Houston bathroom remodel cost guide.

What happens each week of a bathroom remodel?

A typical Houston bathroom remodel, once demo starts:

  1. Week 1: Demo, rough plumbing and electrical changes, framing adjustments.
  2. Week 2: Waterproofing systems go in. This is the step that decides whether your bathroom lasts 5 years or 20.
  3. Weeks 2–3: Tile installation. Patterns and large-format tile take longer than subway or grid layouts.
  4. Week 4: Grout and shower glass template. Vanity install. Lighting.
  5. Week 5: Shower glass install, typically about two weeks after the template. Plumbing fixtures, final trim and paint touch-up.

Primary baths with a custom walk-in shower run 5–7 weeks in total, and luxury spa baths 7–10.

Why do tile and waterproofing take so long?

Waterproofing and tile installation are the longest phases of a bathroom remodel, and good work can't be rushed in Houston humidity. On every shower we use:

  • Cement backer board, never green drywall.
  • A real waterproofing system such as Schluter Kerdi or RedGard on the shower walls. Cut corners here and tile fails in 3–5 years.
  • An exhaust fan sized to the room's cubic footage, so moisture doesn't linger after showers.

Tile time depends on the design. Subway and grid layouts go up faster than patterns or large-format tile. On the shower floor we keep tile 2×2 or smaller, because the grout lines give you slip resistance. For what the tile work costs, see our tile installation cost guide.

Why is shower glass the last thing installed?

Shower glass is measured after the tile is done. We template the glass in week 4, and it typically takes about two weeks to arrive. That's often the last item on the schedule.

Standard rectangular panels cost about half as much as custom shapes. Much of the Katy area has hard water, so we steer clients toward coated glass that resists mineral spotting.

What makes a bathroom remodel take longer?

  • Layout changes. Moving a toilet, shower or gas line adds plumbing and framing work. Larger primary baths with custom showers and layout changes typically take 5–7 weeks.
  • Replacing a tub with a walk-in shower. The drain usually moves and the shower needs a full waterproofing system. It's the bathroom project we do most often in Katy. See what a garden tub to walk-in shower conversion involves.
  • Complex tile. Patterns and large-format tile take longer to install than subway or grid layouts.
  • Spa features. Luxury spa primary baths with heated floors, steam showers and custom glass take 7–10 weeks.

What happens before demo starts?

The timelines above start at demo. Before that, every bathroom project goes through two steps:

  1. Free in-home consultation. We walk the space with you and talk through priorities (shower or tub, storage, lighting, style) and budget.
  2. Design and selections. Tile, vanity, fixtures, lighting and layout are all selected and priced before we start work.

Does a bathroom remodel take less time than a kitchen remodel?

Project Typical timeline once demo starts
Guest bath 3–4 weeks
Primary bath with custom tile and glass 5–7 weeks
Luxury spa primary bath 7–10 weeks
Kitchen remodel 6–12 weeks

Kitchens take longer mainly because custom cabinets take 6–10 weeks from order to delivery. See how long a kitchen remodel takes.

What this means for your bathroom remodel in Katy

Many Katy and Cinco Ranch homes built in the 1990s and 2000s still have the original garden tub in the primary bath, and swapping it for a walk-in shower is the most common project we do there. Plan for the primary-bath range, 5–7 weeks once demo starts, and for the shower glass to be the last piece in. Houston's humidity is the reason we don't rush the waterproofing and tile weeks. What takes the longest in a bathroom remodel?

Waterproofing and tile installation are the longest phases, and they shouldn't be rushed in Houston humidity. Shower glass is the other long item: it's measured after the tile is done and usually has about a two-week lead time, so it's often the last thing installed.

Usually. A Houston guest bath takes 3–4 weeks and a primary bath 5–7 weeks, compared with 6–12 weeks for most kitchen remodels once demo starts. Kitchens take longer mainly because custom cabinets take 6–10 weeks from order to delivery.
