LVP vs engineered hardwood: which is better in Houston?
| LVP | Engineered hardwood | |
|---|---|---|
| Installed cost | $4–$8/sf | $7–$14/sf |
| On a concrete slab | Yes | Yes, glued down |
| Kitchens and bathrooms | Often recommended (premium LVP) | Often recommended |
| Install time, one room | 1–2 days | 1–2 days |
Choose LVP when budget matters most. Choose engineered hardwood when you want real wood on a slab, and buy it with a wear layer of at least 3mm so it can be refinished later instead of replaced.
Why not solid hardwood on a Houston slab?
Houston's humidity makes material choice critical. Solid hardwood moves more than engineered products in our climate, and directly on a concrete slab, movement and moisture issues are inevitable. On slab-on-grade floors we recommend LVP or glue-down engineered hardwood.
Solid hardwood still works fine on second floors and in pier-and-beam homes, such as the older bungalows in the Heights. If you already have ¾-inch solid hardwood, refinishing runs $3–$6 per square foot and extends the floor's life by 15–20 years.
Is tile or LVP better for Houston kitchens and bathrooms?
Both are good choices. The difference is cost and feel:
- Porcelain tile ($8–$15/sf to install, plus the tile) is dense, non-porous and never needs sealing. Modern porcelain mimics wood, marble and stone at a fraction of the cost of the real thing.
- LVP ($4–$8/sf installed) costs about half as much as tile installation alone, before you buy the tile.
Tile needs the right substrate. Tile installed on the wrong substrate fails, so on floors that might flex we use an uncoupling membrane such as Schluter Ditra. In showers we keep floor tile 2×2 or smaller for slip resistance. Natural stone or complex patterns cost $15–$25/sf to install. For the full breakdown, see our tile installation cost guide.
Which flooring should go in each room?
| Room | Good choices | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Ground-floor rooms on a slab | LVP, glue-down engineered hardwood | Solid hardwood |
| Kitchen | Premium LVP, engineered hardwood, tile | Solid hardwood on a slab |
| Bathroom | Porcelain tile, premium LVP, engineered hardwood | Natural stone on shower floors (slippery, needs sealing) |
| Second floor or pier-and-beam home | Solid hardwood works fine | n/a |
Should you refinish your hardwood instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. If the floor is ¾-inch solid hardwood, or engineered hardwood with at least a 3mm wear layer, refinishing runs $3–$6 per square foot. New engineered hardwood costs $7–$14 installed. Refinishing adds 3–5 days to a project for sanding, staining and curing. We'll tell you honestly whether refinishing is worthwhile or replacement is the better call.
How long does flooring installation take?
- One room: 1–2 days for most floors.
- Whole home: 3–7 days, depending on square footage.
- Hardwood refinishing: adds 3–5 days.
New floors are often part of a bigger project. In a kitchen remodel, tile and flooring are typically 5–10% of the budget; see our Houston kitchen remodel cost guide and how long a kitchen remodel takes. What this means for your floors in Katy and west Houston
Most homes in Katy, Cinco Ranch and Fulshear are built on concrete slabs, so the slab rule applies to almost every ground floor: LVP or glue-down engineered hardwood, not solid hardwood. Houston humidity is the reason. If your home has a second story, solid hardwood works fine up there. For pricing on your home, see our flooring installation service or everything we do in Katy.
